History of the Northamptonshire PGA
The names of Richard Kemp (Corby GC), John Freeman (Kingsthorpe GC), Stuart Murray (Northants County GC) and Alf Lovelady (Northampton GC) may not mean much to some of the current county amateur and professional golfers but they organised the first Pro-Am in the county in 1968. It was played at Northants County Golf Club, consisted of nine teams of three and cost 27 shillings to enter.
It was 20 years later before Northamptonshire P.G.A became one of the first counties to be constitutionally set up. Tim Giles (Kingsthorpe was the driving force behind this, with late Stuart Brown (Northants County) who became the first official chairman. George Mobbs (Northants County) became the secretary. Brian Mudge (then Staverton Park) became the first captain. His phone call to Les Cantrell's then of Venture Business Forms to ask for sponsorship was the start of the national renowned Winter Series Pro-Am, which continued with Les Cantrell's sponsorship for ten years. During this time his sponsorship amounted to over £50K. He now sponsors the prestigious Cantrell Cup played for annually by the counties professionals and leading amateurs.
In 1989 there were 10 events in the Pro-Am series - averaging 25 teams. In the 2001/02 series there were 18 events covering virtually all of the courses as well as the 12th Overseas Pro-Am. This is now the best supported Overseas Pro-Am in the country (30 Teams).
The association was fortunate to have the continued sponsorship of The Order of Merit from Barclaycard (10 years), Richard Underwood of Echo Plc and EBS mobile phones. More recently it has been Mike Abbotts of Cert'n'fase who has taken up the mantle of the Winter Series Main Sponsor. The support of Tom Hillery's Lionverge from 1990 for the young professionals in the county continued for 10 years and helped bring through many fine players, especially Shane Rose (Cold Ashby), Stuart Reynolds (Northants County) and Simon Lilly (Wellingborough). Dave Croxton, John Pulford (Autohaus) and Dave Mead (Weedon Motor Co) are also very long term sponsors of the Northamptonshire P.G.A.
In 1991 Stuart Brown moved to the prestigious Slaley Hall in Northumberland. His chairmanship had passed the previous year to Brian Mudge (Overstone Park who held this position for 10 years, before passing it to Henry Bareham(Collingtree) in 2000.
As the counties first chairman Stuart Browns death in the mid 1990's came as an enormous shock, as he prepared to join the seniors circuit.
Many NPGA Professionals attended his funeral in his hometown of Edinburgh.
In 1994 Sydney Cruickshank took over from George Mobbs as the secretary of the association. George was very experienced and former secretary of Northants County. Sid's style of administration and deep knowledge of golf was much loved by everyone he knew, and his death in April 2001 was met with sadness throughout the county. He had only been the Associations first President for a few months. His position as secretary was taken over by Kash Naidu. After a short stint in the hot seat, Greg Croxton (Cold Ashby) took over as Secretary and in 2004 Richard Lobb (Northants County) took up charge of the day to day running of the association. Since 1999 Malcolm Pounds (Northants County) has been the Treasurer of the NPGA and has worked alongside the various Secretaries to help the smooth running of each event.
The Northamptonshire PGA has provided several Midland PGA captains. In a 12 year period Stuart Brown, Tim Rouse, Brian Mudge and Shane Rose were all offered the honour.
1998 saw the first Sponsors day event, held to say thank you to all the Northants PGA tournament sponsors too numerous to mention. The following year saw the NPGA's first charity event linked to sponsors day. Young carers of Northampton and Clubs for young people benefited from the NPGA organised golf events. It's great to give something back. Watch this space for future development!
